What is the Blue Flag Programme?
The 'Blue Flag' programme is an international award given to beaches, marinas and boats that meet certain criteria of environmental quality, safety, services and sustainable management. The programme is managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a non-profit organisation based in Denmark, and is awarded annually on a global level.
The main areas covered by the Blue Flag programme include:
Beaches: Blue Flag beaches are characterised by clean water, sustainable management of natural resources, accessibility for all, and adequate sanitation and safety.
Marinas: Marinas can also be awarded the Blue Flag if they demonstrate high standards in terms of environmental management, boat safety, services and the promotion of sustainable practices.
Boats: Some countries also allow boats, such as sailboats and yachts, to receive the Blue Flag if they meet specific sustainability and safety criteria.
What are the requirements for a Blue Flag?
L'awarding the Blue Flag is based on some 30 parameters including:
- water quality
- waste management
- the preservation of the environment
- accessibility
- security
- environmental education.
Le Blue Flag beaches demonstrate a commitment to the protection of the marine and coastal environment, contributing to sustainable tourism and the promotion of ecosystem-friendly practices.
